Plasma density in Saturn's magnetosphere around equinox

Student: Klaus Gwosch, Uppsala University and Heidelberg University
Supervisor: Michiko Morooka
Period: Spring 2010

Project

We have built and now operate the Langmuir probe instrument LP as part of the RPWI investigation on the Cassini spacecraft, in orbit around Saturn since 2004. This instrument gives unique possibilities to study the distribution of plasma in the magnetosphere of Saturn by its possibility to measure the electrostatic potential of the spacecraft with respect to the surrounding plasma, a quantity directly depending on the plasma density. We have analyzed the first years of such data (up to May 2007) and presented them in a paper by Morooka et al (2009), but since then, we have acquired much more data in various magnetospheric regions. The aim of this project is to analyze these data, with particular regard to the fact that Saturn now is close to equinox, changing the symmetry of the magnetosphere as compared to the previous study.
