Smart-1
was launched in September 2003 by a conventional rocket, but made its
transit to an orbit around the moon be means of an ion engine. The
mission ended by a planned impact landing on the moon in September 3,
2006. We contributed to the project by designing
and manufacturing the two electrostatic probes of the SPEDE
instrument.
The figure below shows Smart-1 with the moon in the background. One of
the two SPEDE probes developed in Uppsala
is visible: it is the
golden stick extending toward upper left. The goldish
colour comes from the use of titanium nitride.
